Here at Springfield Hospital in Chelmsford, Essex, we have
become the Centre of Excellence for weight loss surgery for
the Ramsay Eastern region.
Mr Harvey – Consultant Bariatric surgery surgeon says:
There is an epidemic of obesity in the Western world.
Approximately 1 in 4 adults are obese (BMI > 40) and are
consequently at increased risk of developing diabetes,
cardiovascular disease, cancer and premature death. Attempts to
reduce weight with diet and exercise are, for most overweight
people, of limited and short term benefit.
Drugs too have proved disappointing in both the short and long
term with no more than about 10% loss of excess weight being
achievable in most patients. Surgery can offer much greater
sustained weight loss and can lead to improvement or even
resolution of diabetes, hypertension and other weight related
morbidity. The commonly performed operations are designed to help
the patient achieve a lifelong healthier eating pattern and they do
this mainly as a result of restricting food intake.

Weight loss surgery at Springfield Hospital
At Springfield Hospital we offer three operations. These are
Gastric Banding, Sleeve Gastrectomy and Gastric
Ballooning. All of these procedures work by reducing the
actual size (sleeve Gastrectomy) or effectively reducing the
capacity (gastric banding) size of the stomach, thus reducing the
amount of food eaten at mealtimes.
All procedures can result in loss of around 60% of excess
weight over time. The main difference between the procedures
is that the gastric band is adjustable and also potentially
reversible, the balloon is removable, whereas the sleeve
Gastrectomy permanently reduces stomach size and capacity.
Operations are normally performed using keyhole techniques
resulting in rapid post-operative recovery. The Gastric
Balloon which is a temporary (up to 6 month) is an endoscopic
treatment designed to help educate the patient into long term
healthier eating habits.
Surgery is now a well established and effective method of
achieving significant weight loss. Effective weight loss in turn
leads to improvement in conditions such as diabetes and
hypertension and reduces the risk of premature death. Surgery
should be seriously considered in any patient with a BMI > 40,
or BMI > 35 if the patient has already developed any of the
morbidity associated with obesity.
Surgery has been given the approval of the National Institute
for Clinical Excellence.
