Weight loss surgery at Springfield Hospital

At Springfield Hospital in Chelmsford, Essex, we have become the Centre of Excellence for weight loss surgery for the Ramsay Eastern region, offering Gastric Band, Sleeve Gastrectomy, Gastric Balloon and Gastric Bypass.

We offer four operations - these are Gastric Banding, Sleeve Gastrectomy, Gastric Ballooning and Gastric Bypass. All of these procedures work by reducing the actual size (Sleeve Gastrectomy) or effectively reducing the capacity (Gastric Banding) size of the stomach, thus reducing the amount of food eaten at mealtimes.

The main difference between the procedures is that the gastric band is adjustable and also potentially reversible, the balloon is removable, whereas the Sleeve Gastrectomy and Gastric Bypass permanently reduces stomach size and capacity.

Operations are normally performed using keyhole techniques resulting in rapid post-operative recovery. The Gastric Balloon which is a temporary treatment (up to 6 month) is an endoscopic treatment designed to help educate the patient into long term healthier eating habits.

Benefits of Weight Loss Surgery

The obvious benefit of having surgery is that you should lose weight over a period of months or years. Many people find that losing weight is far easier after surgery because they feel full more easily and can’t overeat.

There is increasing evidence that losing weight when you are obese can offer long-term health benefits. These include:

• Many overweight patients with diabetes find this improves after surgery and weight loss

• You may see improvements in conditions such as high blood pressure and sleep problems

• The majority of patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease who lost weight after surgery saw an improvement in their condition - or in some cases the condition disappeared

• A reduction in the chances of getting weight related health problems such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes

Most people who have weight loss surgery are pleased with the results and don’t suffer from serious complications.

But every medical treatment carries some risk: weight loss surgery is no exception and it is important to discuss this with your consultant.

Patients can sometimes not lose as much weight as they hoped or may put weight back on after initially losing it.

It is important to discuss what the likely outcomes from treatment are with your surgeon and their team.

Mr Michael Harvey – Consultant Bariatric surgery surgeon says:

There is an epidemic of obesity in the Western world. Approximately 1 in 4 adults are obese (BMI > 40) and are consequently at increased risk of developing diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and premature death. Attempts to reduce weight with diet and exercise are, for most overweight people, of limited and short term benefit.

Drugs too have proved disappointing in both the short and long term with no more than about 10% loss of excess weight being achievable in most patients. Surgery can offer much greater sustained weight loss and can lead to improvement or even resolution of diabetes, hypertension and other weight related morbidity. The commonly performed operations are designed to help the patient achieve a lifelong healthier eating pattern and they do this mainly as a result of restricting food intake.

Body Contouring / Body Shaping

After considerable weight loss, be it after surgery or through natural weight loss, some patients are left with excess skin.
