Mr Michael Harvey MS FRCS - Consultant General Surgeon

Mike qualified at Kings College Hospital Medical School, London in 1977.  He trained as a Registrar in Leicester and Norwich and then spent 2 years as a research fellow at the University of Missouri, USA.  Following this post he was appointed as Senior Registrar at the Westminster Hospital for 3 years from 1989-1992.

In 1992 he was appointed as a Consultant Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) Surgeon to Mid Essex Hospitals NHS Trust.

He has worked in private practice at Springfield Hospital since 1992 as a general surgeon with a specialist expertise in surgery of the upper gastro-intestinal tract (oesophagus, stomach and duodenum) and laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery.

He has performed over 3000 keyhole operations including gallbladder removal, surgery for gastro-intestinal reflux and all types of hernia repair.

He is one of a team of 3 surgeons in Chelmsford who operate on patients with oesophageal and gastric cancer, covering a population of 1 million people stretching from North Ipswich to South Chelmsford.

In 2007 together with colleague, Mr S Kadirkamanathan he set up the weight loss surgery programme at Springfield Hospital.  The Hospital offers a multidisciplinary service for patients who have failed to lose weight with diet and exercise regimes and can offer a variety of surgical options which include gastric banding, sleeve gastrectomy and gastric balloons.

Mike believes passionately in what he does and aims to provide support and assistance in the form of surgery to those who fail to lose weight using their willpower alone.  He believes that surgery, together with Springfield’s support network, can offer the best solution for those patients who have tried every other means to lose weight.
