Mike qualified at Kings College Hospital Medical School, London
in 1977. He trained as a Registrar in Leicester and Norwich
and then spent 2 years as a research fellow at the University of
Missouri, USA. Following this post he was appointed as Senior
Registrar at the Westminster Hospital for 3 years from
In 1992 he was appointed as a Consultant Upper
Gastrointestinal (GI) Surgeon to Mid Essex Hospitals NHS Trust.
He has worked in private practice at
Springfield Hospital since 1992 as a general surgeon with a
specialist expertise in surgery of the upper gastro-intestinal
tract (oesophagus, stomach and duodenum) and laparoscopic (keyhole)
He has performed over 3000 keyhole operations
including gallbladder removal, surgery for gastro-intestinal reflux
and all types of hernia repair.
He is one of a team of 3 surgeons in
Chelmsford who operate on patients with oesophageal and gastric
cancer, covering a population of 1 million people stretching from
North Ipswich to South Chelmsford.
In 2007 together with colleague, Mr S
Kadirkamanathan he set up the weight loss surgery programme at
Springfield Hospital. The Hospital offers a multidisciplinary
service for patients who have failed to lose weight with diet and
exercise regimes and can offer a variety of surgical options which
include gastric banding, sleeve gastrectomy and gastric
