Mr Godfrey Charnley is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in hip and knee replacement surgery.

Clinical interests

Mr Charnley has over 20 years' consultant experience of major hip and knee replacement surgery, especially revision surgery.  His surgical practice encompasses both the young and the old using various technologies available.

His practice also includes knee arthroscopy. In view of his expertise he is frequently called upon by lawyers and hospital trusts to give an expert opinion on joint replacement surgery issues.

 

Academic background

Mr Charnley qualified in 1983 from St. Thomas’s Hospital in London.  He subsequently received training as a Registrar in London and as a Senior Registrar in Bristol.  In 2007, he achieved the status of Fellow of The Higher Education Academy. Complimenting his UK training, he had Fellowship training in knee surgery in Basel, Switzerland in 1992, trauma and revision joint replacement surgery in Paris, France and a scholarship in pelvic fracture surgery in Seattle, USA both in 1995. His qualifications are: MBBS: FRCS: FRCS Ed. FRCS Orth. FHEA.

Prior to relocating to Essex he was both an Honorary Senior Lecturer and a Consultant at Derriford Hospital and The Plymouth Post Graduate Medical School between 1995 and 2002. Mr Charnley teaches “surgeons in training” both cemented and cementless hip replacement surgical techniques. He has introduced many new technologies in the realm of hip surgery to Mid-Essex, including biologically coated cementless hip fixation, hip resurfacing and small incision surgery. 

Mr Charnley has also lectured the region’s osteopaths, chiropractors, physiotherapists and rheumatologists about advances in joint replacement surgery. Over the past 20 years he has presented original research in Sweden, Italy, Eire,France, Portugal, Austria as well as the United Kingdom. Mr Charnley was awarded the prize for the best scientific presentation at the Hip 2005 meeting in Toulouse, France and in September 2007, he gave two instructional lectures to the South African Orthopaedic Association on the use of Trabecular Metal in Primary and Revision Hip Surgery.

In 2013, Mr Charnley was part of a masterclass faculty in Paris, organised by The European Federation of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, lecturing on hip replacement after hip fracture and challenging hip replacement cases. For ten years Mr Charnley was an examiner for the FRCS Orth Diploma for the Royal College of Surgeons of England and is a past Regional Clinical Co-ordinator for The National Joint Registry.
