Springfield Hospital's Breast Care department has a brand new state of the art Digital Mammography unit. Digital mammography produces excellent quality images, especially in denser breasts that have previously been more difficult to image. The system allows the acquired images to be stored on a computer and to be manipulated to demonstrate subtle abnormalities that may previously have been more difficult to define.
The breast unit can offer a wealth of clinical experience with three specialist breast surgeons, two specialist breast radiologists and dedicated mammographers and nurses. It can offer its service to women with breast problem symptoms and also to non-symptomatic women merely wishing to have their breasts screened.
For women presenting with a breast problem and who have been referred by their own GP or referred by the Private GP service also offered at Springfield; a “One-Stop” clinic is offered. This consists of an appointment with the Consultant, Digital mammography, further investigations if required and then a diagnostic consultation again with the breast Consultant. He will examine the findings and provide a diagnosis. This reduces waiting time for investigation results and can help alleviate extra anxiety at what can be an anxious time.
Support services are provided in the form of a Clinical nurse specialist in cancer care who can answer any questions and give help and practical support. For those who are non-symptomatic and over 40 years of age but who may wish to have a one off or regular screenings (repeat mammograms should not be performed within a year of each other) we can also offer a direct access private breast health screening service. To be eligible for this you must have NO breast problem symptoms and will be asked to answer some qualifying health questions to ensure that direct access is appropriate for you.
Subject to this, you are able to book a digital mammogram without a GP referral letter.
